<p>Examples of Duties:</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The incumbent in this position will manage and promote the UCRC to the petroleum industry, research community, and the general public; oversee curation of the UCRS&#8217;s well core and cuttings holdings, inventory, and acquisitions; obtain funding to support the UCRC; highgrade the collection to accommodate limited storage space; conduct core and microscopic digital imaging; conduct workshops, answer public inquiries, produce brochures and other publications promoting the UCRC; assist UGS&#8217;s Geologic Information and Outreach staff with public education; assist or lead other UGS geologists with projects involving UCRC facilities and collection; present project work at geologic professional meetings.  Under general supervision, incumbents exercise independent judgment and utilize training in geology to perform professional geologic duties. The work requires climbing of tall ladders and lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds.</p>

<p>Minimum Qualifications:</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Bachelors of Science degree in geology or closely related earth science field. Preference will be given to applicants who have a basic understanding of petroleum geology of Utah, general experience in working with well core and geophysical well logs, and an established working relationship with the petroleum industry and public educators. Additional preference will be given to those with basic inventory, management, digital photography, and computer (MS Word, Excel, Adobe Photoshop, and database management) skills, and applicants with technical and non-technical geologic publications.</p>

<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Call for Nominations:</span></strong></p>
<p>The Utah Geological Association (UGA) is soliciting nominations for the Utah Earth Science Teacher of the Year Award to: (1) recognize and support an outstanding Utahteacher of natural resources in earth sciences for grades K-12, and (2) provide a Utahcandidate for the regional competition sponsored by the American Association of Petroleum Geologist’s (AAPG) Rocky Mountain Section (RMS).   Ultimately, the UGA candidate would qualify for the annual AAPG contest and be selected as The National Teacher of the Year for Excellence in the Teaching of Natural Resources in the Earth<ins cite="mailto:state%20of%20utah" datetime="2012-02-27T11:33"> Sciences.</ins></p>
<p>The UGA awards <strong>$1,500</strong> to the Utah winning teacher, provides the teacher’s school with an educational gift, and submits the teacher’s application to the RMS regional competition.  The RMS winner will be awarded <strong>$500</strong> and be automatically entered into the national AAPG competition, which awards <strong>$5,000 </strong>as well as an expense-paid trip to the May 2013 AAPG Annual Convention inPittsburgh,PA.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><em>* <strong>Natural resources</strong> are defined as earth materials used by<br />
civilization past and present, such as petroleum, natural gas, coal, oil<br />
shale, mineral ores, building stone, and energy resources from the<br />
Earth such as geothermal energy.</em></p>

<p>Digital map and location referencing technology is<br />
rapidly changing. This class will survey available resources<br />
and demonstrate select tools. References will include Internet<br />
sites and tutorials. The class will be held in a computer<br />
laboratory enabling software use and experimentation. The Utah<br />
Department of Professional Licensing is providing a grant for<br />
the continuing education of Professional Geologists that has reduced the<br />
registration fee. Class attendance is limited to the number of computers available, 25.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The class content will include:</p>
<p>• Coordinate Location Referencing Systems: Geographic, UTM, and State Plane</p>
<p>• Internet Information Resources: geology, topographic, and geographic</p>
<p>• Introduction to map/location computer data formats</p>
<p>• Using Google Earth for viewing maps, presenting data, and making measurements.</p>
<p>• Using laptop, hiking, and Ipad GPSs for 5 to 15 meter location referencing</p>
<p>• Transferring location information back and forth from GPS, Computer Maps, and Google Earth</p>
<p>• Georeferencing Maps, Making Measurements, and Transforming Coordinates/File Formats Using Global Mapper</p>
<p>• Creating Internet Maps • Georeferencing Photos</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Bruce Vandre has worked in civil engineering for over 40 years. He has been employed by Geotechnical Engineering Consultants in San Francisco, Portland, and Salt Lake City, the USDA Forest Service, and Utah Department of Transportation. He has had a professional geology license in Oregon and engineering licenses in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado.
