Talk Title: From Outcrops to Oversight: Bridging the gap of Geology in Policymaking

Abstract: While geologists are trained to read the rocks, applying that science to state regulation and policymaking requires an entirely different toolkit. In this talk, we will explore the critical role that geoscientists play at the Utah Division of Oil, Gas & Mining. From balancing stakeholder interests and translating complex technical data for non-scientists to shaping the policies that govern Utah’s extractive industries, we will dive into the real-world challenges and rewards of bridging the gap between field geology and public policy.

Bio: Mick Thomas is the director of the Division of Oil, Gas & Mining with the Utah Department of Natural Resources. His background spans academia, industry, and policy. Since leaving the private sector Mick has spent the past ten years Mick focused on the intersection of resource management and regulatory oversight working in senior roles in Hawaii, Idaho, and now Utah. Mick also serves in leadership capacities with the IOGCC, IMCC, GWPC, and several advisory committees. He leverages his geological expertise to help shape policies that ensure the responsible development and management of Utah’s natural resources.
